American Morse Code (Railroad Morse)

Before there was International morse, there was the original: the code Samuel Morse's operation ran on American land lines from 1844, the one that spelled out What hath God wrought on the Washington-Baltimore line. Railroad dispatchers used it for a century. It looks familiar at a glance — dots and dashes, mostly the same letters — and then it doesn't: some letters contain pauses as part of their identity, and dashes come in two lengths.

The three structural differences

  1. Spaced letters. In American morse, a few letters include an internal long gap — C, O, and others read differently depending on where the silence sits. In International morse, no letter contains an internal gap; silence only separates. This is the deepest difference: American morse encodes in three dimensions (dot, dash, gap), International in two.
  2. Two dash lengths. American telegraphy distinguished a "short dash" (roughly 2 units) from a long one (3+), giving extra symbols room. International standardized one dash length.
  3. Context-dependent characters. Several American letters share a symbol string with digits or punctuation, disambiguated only by position in traffic — efficient for trained operators on dedicated circuits, hostile to everyone else.

The result of those choices is a code that was fast for its specialists and brutal for newcomers — exactly what a private railroad network could afford and an international cable could not.

Why International won

Underwater cables and cross-border traffic demanded a code that survived distortion and could be learned by anyone. The 1865 International standard (the ancestor of today's ITU-R M.1677 chart) deleted the internal gaps and second dash length, gave the digits their clean count-the-dots ladder, and made letters like C and O unambiguous on any circuit. Operators called the old code's quirks charming; accountants called them errors. By the early 20th century the split was formal: land-line America kept its code, everything else — including SOS at sea — went International.
