Why "SOS"? (It's not an abbreviation)

Contrary to popular belief, SOS never stood for "Save Our Souls" or "Save Our Ship". It was chosen in 1906 at the Berlin International Radiotelegraph Convention for one practical reason: the pattern ···–––··· is unmistakable. Nine elements in a rhythmic arc — rising, peaking, falling — it can't be confused with any letter pair or garbled transmission fragment. It reads as a single gestalt even through heavy noise.

The first famous rescue came in 1909, when the SS Arapahoe wireless operator summoned help after losing its propeller — and the Titanic's operators mixed the new SOS with the older CQD in 1912, cementing the signal into world memory.

Is SOS still official?

Yes. While GMDSS (the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) made automated digital distress calls mandatory for ships in 1999, morse SOS remains recognized worldwide — and it's still the fallback when electronics fail. Aviation navigation beacons also broadcast 2–3 letter morse identifiers to this day: tune a VOR and you can hear the station spelling its own name.

The Titanic: how SOS earned its immortality

On the night of April 14, 1912, the Titanic's junior wireless operator Harold Bride reportedly suggested to senior operator Jack Phillips that he switch from the old distress call CQD to the new one: "Send SOS. It's the new call, and it may be your last chance to send it." Phillips alternated both calls as the ship sank — and though more than 1,500 people died, the signals reached the Carpathia, which saved 706 lives. It was the defining demonstration that wireless telegraphy — and a rhythm everyone could recognize — could summon help from beyond the horizon. Maritime radio became mandatory equipment in its aftermath, a rule that traces directly to that night.

The Titanic also taught the world a crueler lesson about interference: ships reporting ice to each other had crowded the airwaves all day; Phillips told the nearest ship's operator to "shut up" hours before the collision. Distress traffic now holds absolute priority on every frequency — another convention written in Morse's dots and dashes.
