How light morse works
Nothing about the code changes between sound and light — a dot is still one unit of "on", a dash three, with the same gaps between symbols, letters, and words. Only the carrier differs. That means every hour of listening practice you do in the quiz or with the translator transfers directly to reading light signals, and vice versa. The U.S. Navy taught signalmen to read lamp-flashed morse at distances where the lamp itself was a dot; the limiting factor was never brightness, it was the reader's rhythm training.
Reading light signals by eye
- Anchor on the dash. A dash is three times a dot — long enough to say "daaah" under your breath. Once your eye catches one dash, the unit is set and everything else falls out.
- Watch the silences, not just the flashes. Letter gaps and word gaps are where beginners lose the message. A visibly "hesitant" pause is the letter boundary doing its job.
- Practice with a partner: one of you flashes short words with this tool in a dim room, the other copies on paper. Five minutes a night builds the skill fast.
Where light signalling still gets used
Emergencies: a torch flashing SOS is understood worldwide and works when your phone has no signal. Outdoor sports: climbers and cavers carry the convention of light signals for basic yes/no. Maritime and aviation: airfield ground crews still use light guns to clear or hold aircraft when radios fail. And quiet places: libraries, tents, late-night house shares — anywhere a voice or a speaker would be wrong, a dim screen is fine.

To send manually with a torch, remember the ratios rather than counting: a dot is "a click", a dash is "a short hold" — the same muscle timing you build in the tapping trainer. Send each word twice, pause, and let the receiver confirm. If they can't read you, slow down rather than shouting louder: in light morse, patience is signal gain.
