How the tap code works (the whole system, in one minute)
Draw a 5×5 grid and fill it with the alphabet, row by row. A is top-left (row 1, column 1); E ends the first row; F starts the second. To send a letter, tap its row number, pause clearly, then tap its column number. That's the entire system. Between letters, take a longer pause; between words, longer still (or agree any clear separator). Everything rides on two numbers between 1 and 5 — which is why it survives lousy acoustics, bad pipes, and trembling hands.
Notice what's missing: no timing ratios, no dots versus dashes, no rhythm training. Where morse is a musical skill, tap code is arithmetic. The cost is speed — even practiced users manage only a few words per minute — and the benefit is that nobody ever has to learn it twice.
The history: how a 2,000-year-old idea saved POWs
The underlying scheme is ancient — Greek scholar Polybius described a 5×5 fire-signal grid two millennia ago as a way to spell any message with torches. The tap version found its defining use in the 20th century: prisoners of war, forbidden to speak, turned walls into telegraph lines. Vietnam-era American pilots at the prison nicknamed the Hanoi Hilton built an entire communication network on it — morale reports, names of newcomers, even chess games — conducted in knocks that guards heard but couldn't parse in time. New arrivals were taught the code by tap on their first night. Communication, it turned out, was survival: isolated prisoners broke; connected ones didn't.
A cousin of the same idea runs through every prison movie's "tapping on pipes" scene — and through SOS-style emergency signalling logic generally: when all channels are taken from you, rhythm on a surface is the channel nobody can confiscate. Learning it (and teaching it through a wall)
- Memorize the anchors, not the grid. Row starters spell a mnemonic-friendly sequence: A-F-K-P-U (row 1 starts A, row 2 starts F…). E is 1,5; O is 3,5; T is 4,5 — the right edge reads E-J-O-T-Y down. Two anchors and you can reconstruct everything else by counting.
- Practice with pairs of numbers only. Say "3,2" out loud for L until number-pairs feel like letters. This is the reverse of learning morse's rhythm alphabet — here the mapping is purely positional.
- Drill through a real wall. Accuracy of pauses is the only skill: row-pause-column must be unmistakable. Send slow; counting errors at speed are the system's one failure mode.

What is tap code?
Tap code (knock code) is a way to spell text with taps on a wall, pipe, or table. Each letter lives in a 5×5 grid: you tap the row number, pause, then tap the column number. H, in row 2 column 3, is tap-tap … tap-tap-tap. It needs no equipment, no training in rhythm — just counting.
How is tap code different from morse code?
Morse encodes each letter as a rhythm of short and long signals — it's fast but must be learned by ear. Tap code encodes each letter as two numbers of identical taps — it's slower but almost zero-learning: show anyone the grid and they can use it in a minute. Morse needs skill; tap code needs only counting. That's why prisoners favored it: new inmates could be brought up to speed through a wall in hours.
Is tap code still used?
Rarely as a primary channel — it's a fallback of last resort. Its modern value is educational and recreational: escape rooms, scout activities, and the historical record of POW communication, most famously from Vietnam-era prisons (the Hanoi Hilton), where captured US pilots kept a tap-code conversation network running for years against explicit rules.
Why do C and K share a cell?
The 5×5 grid holds 25 cells but English has 26 letters, so one pair must merge. The standard convention merges C and K — they rarely both appear ambiguously in real words — and treats Z as essentially unused (or shares Y's cell). Other historic variants merged I/J instead.
