How do you write X in Morse code?
In International Morse Code, the letter X is written − · · − — one dash, two dots, one dash. In plain text you'll see it as -..-, and spoken aloud it is dah-di-di-dah. Its NATO radiotelephony name is X-ray, so “X as in X-ray” (voice spelling) and “X as in dah-di-di-dah” (code) are the same letter in two systems.

X is a four-element letter with a heavy frame and a light core — and that symmetry is its identity: if the opening and closing dashes match and the two dots sit evenly between them, X is nearly impossible to mistake for anything else. The sound of X: a rhythm sandwich
Operators hear X as dah-di-di-dah — two slabs of bread with a light dot-dot filling. The stress frames the letter: heavy, light-light, heavy. Among four-element letters that contour is unique: B (− · · ·) runs heavy-to-light, V (· · · −) runs light-to-heavy, and X brackets.
A shape mnemonic that sticks: written “X” is two strokes crossing — a long stroke down-left, a quick crossing flick, another long stroke down-right. Dash out, dot-dot, dash back. The letter draws itself in sound.

Is X worth your practice time?
Honesty first: X lives in the basement of every English frequency table — #26, roughly 0.15% of running text, jostling with J and looking up at only Q and Z. By frequency logic alone, X should be the last letter you drill. Three arguments say otherwise.
The design argument. X is the frequency-to-length logic of Morse made visible: rare letters were handed longer codes so that common ones stay short. X spends its full four elements — and spends them *symmetrically*. Compare E (·) at #1 and T (−) at #2, then X at #26; one glance at the chart shows the whole gradient. The vocabulary argument. The palindrome letter: X reads the same both ways
Three structural ideas organize the whole alphabet, and X sits at the intersection of all of them. A palindrome is a code that reads identically backwards. A mirror means swapping every dot for a dash and every dash for a dot. A reversal means reading the code backwards in element order.
X (− · · −) read backwards is − · · − — X again. It is a genuine palindrome, one of only three four-element letters with the property, alongside H (· · · ·) and P (· − − ·). Now apply the mirror instead: − · · − becomes · − − · — which is P. So X and P are mirror twins *and* each is separately a palindrome, a double relationship unique in the alphabet.
The training payoff: X has no reversal twin to confuse it — read it backwards and you've lost nothing, which is why X stays recognizable even when a fading signal drops you mid-letter. Its only structural neighbor is P, and that pairing responds well to alternation drills: heavy-frame versus light-frame, answered at speed.
X's branch of the family tree
X belongs to the branch of the alphabet that opens with the chunk − · (dah-dit), seeded by N (− ·). Every letter below starts with that same heavy-light opening; what differs is only the tail.

Practice routines for X
Several short sessions beat one long one: X's failure mode is a fatigued closing dash, and fatigue only arrives with marathon practice.
- The sandwich check. Send X ten times at slow speed and grade only one thing: did the closing dash match the opening dash? A mismatched frame is X's signature fault. If the last dah thins out — and at first it will — slow the whole letter rather than muscling the ending.
- The D-B-X rotation. Send D, B, X, D, B, X for two minutes. All three share the − · · opening; only the tail differs. This drill teaches your hand to commit to the tail early and decisively instead of hesitating halfway through the letter.
- Palindrome listening. Have a partner — or the translator — send X at speed among random letters and raise a hand only on X. Because X has no reversal twin and only one mirror twin, the game has an unusually clean signal: a confidence builder for exactly the learners who fear rare letters.
DX: the X that hams chase every day
Amateur radio's favorite two letters are DX — shorthand for a long-distance (“distance”) contact. A DX station is a far one; a *DXpedition* is an expedition mounted to a rare island or territory expressly so the world can work it; the DXCC (DX Century Club) is the hobby's most coveted award, earned by confirming contacts with 100 entities. Entire operating careers are organized around the word — and every one of them passes through the rhythm dah-di-di-dah.
X fronts the same contraction habit across radio culture: RX and TX stand for receiver and transmitter, the two halves of every station. It's a satisfying irony of the code: one of the rarest letters in English is permanently welded into the most aspirational word in the hobby. Common X mistakes and how to fix them
- Weakening the closing dash. The final dah must match the first, three full units. A thin ending turns X into “a D and some debris.” Record yourself once — the mismatch is easier to hear in playback than while sending.
- Rushing the middle dots. The two di's must stay even, with a clean 1-unit gap. Squeeze them together and the letter sounds like a malformed C (− · − ·); open the gap too wide and you've sent two letters. The frame doesn't rescue the filling.
- Flipping X and P. The classic mirror error: heavy-frame (X) versus light-frame (P). Under speed and noise the ear inverts weights. Alternate X, P, X, P for two minutes — answering “which end is heavy?” — and the confusion dissolves.
From unknown quantity to X-ray
X's whole public career prepared it for Morse. In mathematics, “x” became the standard name for the unknown — a convention that spread through European algebra in the 1600s and never left. In 1895, Wilhelm Röntgen discovered a mysterious penetrating radiation and, not knowing what it was, named it X-Strahlen: X-rays, the unknown rays. The discovery won the first Nobel Prize in Physics, and when NATO needed a radio-proof word for X in the 1950s, *X-ray* was the obvious pick.
So the letter that means “unknown” arrived at the code with the most famous name in the spelling alphabet — and then, in the ham's DX, became the letter that means “as far as possible from here.” For a character appearing in 0.15% of English text, X has led an outsized life: rarity exchanged for length, symmetry kept for free.
