Why over-learn a letter that ranks #23?
Honesty first: K is not a high-frequency letter. It sits around rank #23 in English — roughly 1% of running text — so the “drill what you'll read most” argument that carries E (·) and T (−) doesn't apply. Why over-learn K anyway?
Three real reasons. Procedure payload: every completed CW transmission ends with K or its sibling KN, so you'll *send* the pure rhythm of K more often than most letters you read. Callsign payload: United States amateur callsigns famously begin with K, W, N, or AA–AL — a huge slice of the world's hams carry a K-call, making K one of the first letters you copy in every other contact. OK is the perfect two-second warm-up — nothing but weight. KNOCK is the graduation exercise — three K's in five letters, and a word that imitates its own rhythm. If you can send KNOCK cleanly at 12 WPM, your middle gaps are disciplined.
Three drills that lock K in
As always: several short sessions beat one long one. K's failure mode is the fatigued final dash, and fatigue only arrives with marathon practice.

Common mistakes when sending and hearing K
- Widening the middle gap. The dot must sit 1 unit from each dash. Let the gap stretch toward 3 and the ear hears two letters, N and T (− · | −), instead of one K. Keep the sandwich pressed together.
- Starving the second dash. A hurried final dash degrades K toward D (− · ·). Pay the second dah in full — same length as the first, every time.
- Flipping K and R under speed. The classic mirror error. At speed the ear grabs the *placement of weight* and can swap rim for center under noise. Two minutes of K-R-K-R alternation dissolves the hesitation.
