Wabun Code — Morse for Japanese

Morse's idea traveled the world within a generation of 1844, and every script it met asked the same question: how do you spell this language in rhythm? Japan's answer was wabun code — a full morse alphabet for the kana syllabary, in which the language's sounds (not its kanji) ride the wire as dots and dashes. It ran Japanese telegraphy for over a century and remains one of the most elegant adaptations of the code to a non-Latin script.

How you map a syllabary to dots and dashes

The insight that made wabun work: Japanese telegraphy didn't need to encode thousands of kanji — it needed to encode sounds. Messages were written phonetically in kana, and each kana got a pattern on the same logic as the Latin alphabet: frequently-used syllables received shorter, punchier patterns, and the table extended naturally to Japanese punctuation. Operators learned it as a second keyboard, and the gojūon order (the traditional a-i-u-e-o syllabary sequence) served the same memorization role that frequency order serves in English morse.
